In one respect, Homecoming has changed very little at Lake Highlands High School during the past 20 years.
“What I remember most about Homecoming is what I wore to the dance,” says Jay Stallings Thomas, who was a member of the drill team that performed at the football game in 1973.
“I had lavender hot pants, which I wore under a corduroy skirt that was slit somehow so you could see the hot pants. And I had a matching lavender blouse and a matching purple vest. It was really cool.”
The class of 1994 will display its sartorial splendor when it hosts this year’s Homecoming Weekend from Oct. 28-30.
This year’s weekend includes:
- The annual Varsity Review, scheduled Oct. 28 in the school auditorium, is entitled “It Had to Be You.” The review will feature a dozen acts, as well as performances by the Highlandettes, cheerleaders, marching band and the 18-piece Lake Highlands Jazz Ensemble.
- The Homecoming Court will be introduced to students at a pep rally Oct. 29. At the pep rally, the Highlandette officers will preview their modern dance performance. The Highlandettes have been working for a year on the routine, set to a jazz score.
- The Homecoming football game at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29, matches the Wildcats against Pearce.
- The Homecoming queen will be crowned prior to the game, while the halftime show will include a tribute to the 1970s rock groups Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears – as well as a drum solo from Frank Zappa’s “Alphonso’s Pancake Breakfast.” The Highlandettes’ performance will conclude with their well-known kicking drill.
- On Oct. 30, there will be an encore performance of the Varsity Review, as well as the Homecoming Dance. The dance, planned for the Student Center, will feature a Mardi Gras theme, says Dana Carter, the student council sponsor.
“Many of our students have been planning this celebration for more than a year,” says Lake Highlands assistant principal Phil Jones.
“We have a terrific group of students and alumni, and this promises to be a great Homecoming weekend.”
