The Sandlot

For. Ev. Er. For. Ev. Er. That’s how long it’s been since you’ve seen the timeless boyhood flick The Sandlot, unless you’re my sister, whose children watch it once a day, though they never see the ending because the DVD (tape? not sure) broke right after the big monster-dog chase scene. But I digress. Oak Highlands Brewery — Lake Highlands only brewhouse — which hosts events for families on a regular basis, screens The Sandlot tonight, Wednesday. The taproom opens at 6:30 p.m. and the show rolls at 7:30. (Shame my nephews aren’t in town.) If you miss tonight’s event, remember the venue — owned and operated by two Lake Highlands guys — holds free classic movie night once a month. Tonight, enjoy food and drink from Shady’s Burgers. Follow them on Facebook for upcoming events. Address is 10484 Brockwood in Lake Highlands.

Calling proud word/lit/book nerds: A conversation about rare and collectable books at Half Price Books takes place Thursday. It’s Half Price Books’ 45th Birthday, and “since 1972 the store has purchased and sold some extraordinary gems,” organizers note. Steve “The Buy Guy” Leach along with other collectible experts, show and discuss some of the rarest and most unusual collectible items that have recently arrived at area stores. Remember, the last Thursday of each month is Collectible Conversations Night at the 5803 E. Northwest Highway location.

Pole dancers compete Saturday in Lake Highlands

Pole dancing ain’t what it used to be (well, it might be in some places, but not in this case). Picture not what you’ve seen at the Bada Bing, but rather a sport and art that requires the strength of a gymnast and the grace of a ballerina. It’s an increasingly popular fitness trend for women and — yes — men. Competitive pole dancing is quite impressive and, mostly, PG rated. In fact, the 2017 Southwest Pole Championship takes place Saturday from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. at the Dallas Children’s Theater (5938 Skillman). Pole dancers in the competition range in age from 18 to 50-plus (grandmasters). An all-day pass costs $33. Purchase tickets and download a program schedule here.

Do you (or your future-famous kiddo) need a professional headshot for your portfolio, blog, book jacket or upcoming audition? The things can be costly, especially if you’re a struggling artist. The folks at Makers Connect in Lake Highlands are here for you, offering a day of $45 headshots, Sat. July 29. “The fee includes a photo session, with one look, of approximately 15 minutes and the final selection of one high resolution digital downloadable photo and the availability to purchase additional downloads, prints and more,” organizers note. Visit eventbright to book your spot. While you’re there, peruse unique crafts and art from local talent.

It’s their birthday and they’ll do what they want. So, to mark its first year in business, Lake Highlands Creamery (9660 Audelia) introduces The Meat Stick: Chocolate ice cream dipped in chocolate and rolled in candied One90 Meats Burnt Ends. Sales of said Meat Stick benefit Meat Fight and its significant efforts to cure multiple sclerosis. You can also opt for meatless ice cream. Drop in anytime between 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday. More details here.

Audelia Road Library hosts the 2nd annual Local Authors Book Fair
