That’s how long it’s been since you’ve seen the timeless boyhood flick The Sandlot, unless you’re my sister, whose children watch it once a day, though they never see the ending because the DVD (tape? not sure) broke right after the big monster-dog chase scene. But I digress. Oak Highlands Brewery — Lake Highlands only brewhouse — which hosts events for families on a regular basis, screens The Sandlot tonight, Wednesday. The taproom opens at 6:30 p.m. and the show rolls at 7:30. (Shame my nephews aren’t in town.) If you miss tonight’s event, remember the venue — owned and operated by two Lake Highlands guys — holds free classic movie night once a month. Tonight, enjoy food and drink from Shady’s Burgers. Calling proud word/lit/book nerds: A conversation about rare and collectable books at Half Price Books takes place Thursday. It’s Half Price Books’ 45th Birthday, and “since 1972 the store has purchased and sold some extraordinary gems,” organizers note. Steve “The Buy Guy” Leach along with other collectible experts, show and discuss some of the rarest and most unusual collectible items that have recently arrived at area stores. Remember, the last Thursday of each month is Collectible Conversations Night at the 5803 E. Northwest Highway location.
Pole dancers compete Saturday in Lake Highlands
Pole dancing ain’t what it used to be (well, it might be in some places, but not in this case). Picture not what you’ve seen at the Bada Bing, but rather a sport and art that requires the strength of a gymnast and the grace of a ballerina. It’s an increasingly popular fitness trend for women and — yes — men. Competitive pole dancing is quite impressive and, mostly, PG rated. In fact, the 2017 Southwest Pole Championship takes place Saturday from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. at the Dallas Children’s Theater (5938 Skillman). Audelia Road Library hosts the 2nd annual Local Authors Book Fair
Several published local authors spend Saturday at the Audelia Road Branch Library for a book fair. “Among them will be Jeffrey Eaton, whose mystery/thrillers include “Murder Becomes Manhattan” and “Murder Becomes Miami.” Published byThe Cornet Group, hardcovers of both books will be available for purchase at a special price,” organizers espouse.
