You have to have been an Advocate reader for awhile to recall Porky the Pothole Pig, our infamous buddy from years ago. The original Porky retired in 2008, when I guess we were younger and more idealistic about what we thought was the City’s diminishing pothole problem.
Well, as Advocate president Rick Wamre points out, “eight years and a billion-dollar pothole/streets crisis later, we’re a little older and more jaded, if not wiser.”
The Lake Highlands Porky lives in the passenger seat of my car now, and when we hit a hole hard enough, we get out and snap a picture (you likely won’t see us on the busier streets like Skillman or Audelia, because, this is not a project worth dying for).
This week, we struck a doozy of a dip in the 8700 block of Fenchurch (at Buxhill). In general, this neighborhood is undergoing some street work, and ivory patches in the concrete indicate a pothole or few have been mended in recent years. Still, there is much work to be done. This particular pothole is toward the middle of the street, so it is avoidable in most circumstances.
Being a good Dallas citizen, Porky reported this pothole to the city’s 311 web portal Thursday, Feb. 25, at 11:10 a.m.; the portal promises a three-day look-see into the problem and then a five-day repair date. You can follow along yourself by visiting the website and putting in the following service code: 16-00076304.
We know the city crews are overwhelmed with potholes, so Porky’s just trying to help out.
