fourth of july bannerMembers of the Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League are pausing just a moment as the new year begins to reflect on their many accomplishments in 2012. The 100-woman organization particularly outdid itself this year, and we in LH are the lucky beneficiaries.

In December, 95 children at Skyview and Aikin Elementary schools received Christmas gifts as part of the LHJWL Angel Tree Project. Counselors at Skyview and Aikin Elementaries, also members of the League, helped identify the needy kids and members came through with uniform shirts, pants and shoes for each one. Donations of socks, underwear, toys and games were added to make it an extra-special Christmas.

In September, the League collected school supplies to get kids at Northlake Elementary started on the right foot. “We had an overwhelming response,” member Emily Kretz told me, “and were able to deliver a large load of a variety of school supplies to the teachers and students.”

Emily, like many members of the League, grew up in LH, graduated from Lake Highlands High School, and returned to the neighborhood to raise her own growing family. She says the League’s next big event, the April Fun Run, brings the community together in a way that is uniquely Lake Highlands.

Funds raised from last year’s Fun Run were used to purchase the banners announcing LH Exchange Club’s Fourth of July Parade and Oktoberfest, LH Women’s League’s Home Tour and – soon to come – the LHJWL Fun Run.

“I’m proud of the generosity of our group, our love for this community and everyone who is a part of it,” said Emily. “Our group strives not only to help beautify our community (all funds from our fun run go to a project that accomplishes this), but also to help those in need and to hopefully better the situation of some of our neighbors and their families.”
