EDUCATION
Nutcracker Performance. Numerous Lake Highlands kids will perform with the City Dance Theatre in their Dec. 1-3 performances of The Nutcracker Ballet at the Garland Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $11, reserved seating, and may be purchased at GPAC. The performance on Dec. 1 is at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 2 is at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m., and Dec. 3 is at 2:30 p.m. For information, call 972-205-2790.
Woman of Achievement. The YWCA recently honored RISD Administrator Dr. Margaret Fair, Assistant to the Superintendent. Fair was recognized at the Eighth Annual Woman of Achievement in Public Affairs Luncheon and was one of five women honored, in different categories, for her many years of service in the education category.
Play Ball. Two Lake Highlands girls represented our area in November, sinning the championship tournament of the Plano Sports Authority Fall Fast Pitch Softball 14-and-under League. Allison Dogger and Beth Sutton, members of the All-Stars, were on hand to help their team win the three-round event. Allison is an eight-grader at Lutheran High School and Beth is a ninth grader at Lake Highlands High School.
Cheers. Lake Highlands High School graduate, Jill Gin, daughter of Ms. Susan Gin, was recently elected as one of the 2000-2001 cheerleaders for Austin College.
Charles W. Ingram, Jr. was honored by the State Board Of Education. He was one of 14 honored as “Heroes for Children” for their contributions to their local school districts and the school children of Texas. Ingram is an investment broker and a resident of Lake Highlands, and has been involved in volunteer work with the RISD for the last eight years.
Early Childhood PTA. On Wednesday, Dec. 13, The Lake Highlands Area Early Childhood PTA (LHAECPTA) will hold its monthly membership meeting at Highlands Christian Church, 9949 McCree Road, from 9-11 a.m. Susan Wyatt, DAPE will present a program titled, “Handling Holiday Stress.” The PTA offers monthly general meetings, playgroups, a baby-sitting co-op, community service projects, elementary school tours, and adult interest groups such as movie group, book review group, walking groups, dinner groups, Bunko groups and recipe group. The Exchange Club of Lake Highlands has announced the October Youths of the Month at Lake Highlands High School. Jaini Shah, a National Merit Semifinalist, is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha. She has a 4.0 grade point average. Mark Allen is also a National Merit Semifinalist and also has a 4.0 GPA. Allen is ranked 5th in his class.
First Class. Lake Highlands Junior High orchestra teacher, David DeVoto, was the 1st week recipient of the Minyard Food Stores First Class Teacher Of The Week contest. Marissa Bailey, a 7th grade student LHJH, entered DeVoto in the contest. He received a $1,000 and Marissa won a Domino’s pizza party for the orchestra class.

Lake Breaking News. For the Love of the Lake will have their last spruce-up of the year, Sunday, Dec. 10. Register at the Bath House Cultural Center between 8 and 9 a.m. Enjoy hot Starbucks coffee, Great Harvest Bread Company treats, orange juice and chocolate milk from Schepps Dairy, and bottled water Rain Fresh. Give a holiday present to the lake by helping to keep her clean.
New Digs. Beginning in January, For the Love of the Lake will be in a great new space in Casa Linda (under Eckerd’s, facing Buckner and Doctors’ Hospital, just north of Garland Road). Registration for The Second Saturday Shoreline Spruce-Ups will be held there, as well as monthly volunteer meetings with speakers. The walls are lined with George Boyd’s compelling photographs of wildlife and wildflowers seen at White Rock Lake.
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Winter Solstice. An informal not-for-profit movement in Dallas, Celestial Rhythm Celebrations is committed to popularizing seasonal observances because natural holidays like solstices and equinoxes are shared by all ages, races and religions. CRC events are free: donations are appreciated. Volunteers always needed. Please call hotline to confirm date and location. The next scheduled event is a winter solstice celebration on Dec. 21, 7-10 p.m. and will include ceremony, ritual, music, poetry, dance, spiral dance and Yule Log burning.
EVENTS
Holiday at the Chamber. The Dallas Northeast Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Holiday Party at the Dallas Arboretum’s Camp House Dec. 7 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Invited guests include Dallas City Council and school board members and other area elected officials. The Chamber will be collecting teddy bears at the door for donation to an area hospital; cost to attend the event is $15 for Chamber members and their spouses and $20 for non-members. Advocate Alum. Gallier and Wittenberg, Inc., a Dallas based, integrated marketing communications firm, has hired Pam Harris, a former East Dallas resident and editor of Advocate Publishing.
Natural Best. For the Love of the Lake won the Texas Corporate Recycling Council’s Environmental Vision Award at their annual convention in Houston. The award, which is made out of recycled computer circuit boards, was in the Non-Profit Community Relations category for FTLOTL’s on-going recycling and litter abatement project at White Rock Lake. The project is a joint effor
t between FTLOTL, The Dallas Park and Recreation Department, Keep Dallas Beautiful, BFI Waste Systems in Plano, The Adopt-A-Shoreline groups, and all of the users of White Rock Lake Park who care enough to "Stash their Trash and Recycle at The Rock!"
Board Member. Lake Highlands resident, Doug Harrison, has been elected to serve on the board of directors for Fowler Christian Apartments of Dallas. Harrison is a partner with the law firm of Gardere & Wynne and a member of Northway Christian Church.
