Chances are, if you’ve driven down Northwest Highway lately on a weekday morning, you might’ve noticed a man running around on the side of the road waving a sign at you. Is this man crazy? Perhaps. Hyper? Yes. Caffeine buzzed? Definitely. But that’s just his job. He’s the “sign shaker” for White Rock Coffee, a new java joint created by neighborhood residents Bob and Nancy Baker. All of the coffee here is roasted in-house thanks to Bob, who got his start back in the Pacific Northwest espresso boom of the 1970s. For 25 years, he kept roasting his own coffee beans as a hobby. Now, after a long haul in the furniture business, Bob – with Nancy on board – finally decided to chase the dream “that’s always been in the back of his mind,” Nancy says, of owning his own coffee shop. For 18 months, the Bakers created and tested hundreds of different recipes in their home kitchen, and what they came up with ended up on White Rock Coffee’s menu. Some of the more notable brews include the White Rocker, below, a latte with caramel and white chocolate. Not a coffee drinker? No worries, you’ll also find a selection of hot tea and fruit smoothies on the menu.
