Students workout in the MAC

Lake Highlands High School has canceled summer athletic workouts until July 13, Principal Kerri Jones announced by email Wednesday. The action was taken after the UIL recommended pausing workouts “in anticipation of the July 4 holiday and the potential for increased social interactions that could spread COVID-19.”

Students will receive refunds if they already paid for the canceled session.

Strength and conditioning sessions began at LHHS June 8 for high school students and expanded a week later to include junior high athletes. Training is being held in the new Lake Highlands multipurpose activity center (MAC), with daily health screenings, temperature checks and social distancing, according to RISD Athletic Director Leslie Slovak. Athletes are kept in the same workout group when possible, and equipment is disinfected after each use.

Wednesday also marked an all-time high in the number of coronavirus cases in Dallas County, with the county surpassing the 700 mark for the first time. In his daily briefing, LHHS graduate Dr. Philip Huang said Thursday’s count would exceed 1,000.  RISD and UIL did not say if they would recommend extending the closure if the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise.
