As the anniversary of September 11 approaches, students at Lake Highlands High School are preparing to discuss events leading up to the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The LHHS Junior World Affairs Council will host Major General James Williams, USMC, retired, to present “9/11/2001: The Back Story and Military Response.” Maj. Gen. Williams will talk about the events that led to 9/11, military engagement in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Sunni and Shi’a divide, Al Qaida, the Taliban and ISIS (DASH).

Before his retirement, Williams served as Asst. Commander of the 2nd Marine Division, leading troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has earned the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star Medal.

JWAC events are free and open to students and members of the community. The discussion will take place in the “L” building library at 4:15 p.m. on Sept. 11.
