Lake Highlands’ Austin Jones was the District 9-5A Co-Defensive MVP last season. Now he’s a fourth-class cadet (freshman) at the Air Force Academy.

"Everything is going pretty good right now," Jones said via e-mail. "I just finished Basic Training which was something I never expected."

Football practice started Monday and Jones, a 6-2, 210-pound linebacker, is working hard to make the traveling squad.

"The biggest transition I’m going through right now is learning new terminology and getting down the new 3-4 defensive scheme that I’ve never seen," Jones said.

Air Force opens the season Sept. 5 against Nicholls State. There are no visits to Texas on the 2009 schedule – the Mountain West Conference game against TCU on Oct. 10 is in Colorado.

"Our team looks very talented and I can’t wait until the season starts," Jones said. "Playing D-I football at the AFA is everything I expected."
