The volleyball team will compete for the first time as a varsity squad Friday with the first scrimmage of the year. The roster was set at the end of Tuesday’s tryouts. Lake Highlands will take on McKinney Boyd, Sachse and Bishop Lynch at 10 a.m. at Boyd.
LH is also scheduled to scrimmage Bishop Lynch, Arlington Lamar and Pearce at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pearce.
"For the first scrimmages, I just need to see how we’re playing together," first-year coach Melissa Christman said. "I feel like I already have an idea of what we need to do to be successful in a general sense. I just need to see where we are."
Christman said she already knows the players individually, it’s how they work as a unit that is still unfamiliar.
"In a lot of ways, I still fell I’m getting to know the team," Christman said. "Which is funny because we’ve spent so much time together."

The 12-player varsity roster includes a freshman, 6-0 middle Bonnie Vernon. Last year, Matalee Reed made a big contribution as a freshman.
"In physical testing, she did the most push-ups and finished first in agility," Christman said. "That’s quite the combination."
The rest of the freshmen began their tryouts Wednesday. Freshman tryouts were delayed two days because a player contracted swine flu. Christman said things are somewhat back to normal.
"There’s a couple of girls not feeling good, but they were not diagnosed (with swine flu)," Christman said. "We’re disinfecting during water breaks. We look like germaphobes."
