The dangers of Swine Flu hit home yesterday – way too close to home. LH’s Sid Davis succumbed to pneumonia after a week spent fighting H1N1. Newspaper and TV news reports refer to him as the “lawyer in the Dallas County constable probe,” but we all just knew him as Tim’s dad, Robin’s dad, Kitty’s dad, Linda’s husband, dear friend, and friendly neighbor.

Sid was a healthy 54-year-old, shattering the idea that only folks with underlying health conditions were at risk of serious complications. His death, with the Swine Flu vaccine delayed and difficult to find, makes getting a pneumonia vaccine worthy of serious consideration. The pneumonia vaccine is readily available and inexpensive, and is one small hedge of protection against this common, and deadly, result of H1N1.

My favorite memories of Sid involve long summer days watching him play catch with little Tim, now a senior at LHHS. You’d have thought the busy, successful attorney had nothing better to do. I believe he thought that was true.

The family is stunned and exhausted from their around-the-clock vigil, but they took a moment to send this message: “Words will never be able to express our love and appreciation for all of your prayers, cards, delicious food, and other kindnesses too numerous to count.”
