Lake Highlands High School 2009 graduate Carlie Davis has joined the professional German soccer team Herforder Sv Borussia Friedenstal. Herforder, based in the north-central German town of Herford, competes in Germany’s top division of women’s soccer known as the Bundesliga.
“Fortunately, this is not my first time far from home,” says the former Wildcat standout, who played in Cyprus for 4 months in 2014 and spent two season with Portland Thorns FC. “I’m a little more used to all of the difficulties of being far away, even a foreign country. The time change is difficult – it’s anywhere from a 6 to a 9 hour time change from all my friends and family – so it makes communication a bit of a challenge. And it’s always tough to miss out on birthdays and weddings and baby showers. Lastly, it’s a challenge to learn how to navigate a new country – driving, currency, language – all of the things you have to learn when you are somewhere new.”
Competing in the Bundesliga, Carlie will play for fans who love the sport and face storied teams such as Bayern Munich, FFC Frankfurt and Wolfsburg.
“I am looking forward to playing in this league,” says Carlie, an All Big 12 player during her days at Baylor. “The women’s Bundesliga is considered one of the best in the world, so the opportunity to play with and against some of the top players in the women’s game is super exciting. Also, I am a wanderer, so I am very excited to see Germany and a few other amazing European cities and countries that I’m close to now. It should be an exciting few months.”
