Yes, soon enough, the Dallas Children’s Theater (DCT), which has been delighting kids young and old for more than 18 years, will be calling our neighborhood home.

The theater will move from its current home at The Crescent Theater to the former Don Carter bowling alley at Northwest and Skillman. In addition to a 380-seat main theater, the new location will allow much more room for acting classes as well as a “black box” room, which can be used as a smaller theater or as a learning tool for students.

In its nearly two decades of existence, the DCT has presented dozens of live productions of children’s plays and musicals. The shows run the gamut from silly to serious. Some of this season’s offerings include the merry misunderstandings of Amelia Bedelia, the timeless stories of Grimm Tales and the dark humor of Holes, based on the award-winning book by Louis Sachar.

The first phase of construction, which included raising the roof in the theater area of the building, is now complete. And that’s a good thing, because DCT recently received word that it would have to vacate its current location, which it’s been in for 14 years, by Jan. 15.

All this means that if the new location is to be ready by mid-January, the second phase of construction must happen much more quickly than originally planned.

“If we can get started right away, it will be feasible to finish the construction by our move date,” Flatt says. “But we’re still $2 million dollars away from meeting our budget, plus needing additional items such as landscaping and equipment. So we’ll really need gifts and pledges of every size.”
