Camp Sweeney’s “Play for the Day” Festival is the official start to summer in Lake Highlands, with food and fun at the newly christened Walne Park. The 5K race kicks off at 9 a.m. on Memorial Day Monday, May 25, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Family Fun Run.
Proceeds support Camp Sweeney for children with Type I Diabetes, sometimes called juvenile diabetes. Camp Sweeney helps children learn to administer insulin shots, test blood sugars and make healthy diet choices. For diabetic kids, experiencing the joys of “sleepaway camp” might be impossible without the medical supervision provided by highly trained counselors.
The fun begins with a 5K race on a timed and certified course, followed by a family fun run for friends of all ages. The free outdoor festival features live music, games and rides. Dogs and strollers are welcome.
Runners may register as a team or individual online here. Donors may contribute here. Walne Park is at 9443 Church Road across from Lake Highlands High School.
