LHWL’s Mahjong Tournament is Sept. 24

Lake Highlands Women’s League volunteers are hosting their annual Mahjong Tournament this month, and they’re inviting the entire community to join the fun. Participants may sign up as individual players or tables of four to tune up their game and enjoy friends — new and old.

The ancient Chinese game of Mahjong is enjoying a stellar rise in popularity across the country, with some comparing it to the bunco our moms played together and the bridge our grandmothers played. The game is challenging and requires concentration, but luck plays a big role in the outcome — and it’s just plain fun.

The LHWL tournament kicks off at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at a beautiful private residence in Preston Hollow (the address will be shared upon signup). Tickets are $440 for 4 or $125 for one and may be purchased online here. One person from each of 32 tables will advance while the others continue to play. In the end, two final winners will be crowned “Mahjong Champs.”

Proceeds will be used to distribute grants and scholarships for local nonprofits and LHHS students. Last year, LHWL gave away more than $200,000.
