Dr. Ernie Fernandez, director of Camp Sweeney, with a running group.

Lace up your tennies and gather your crew for the 13th annual Camp Sweeney “Play for the Day” festival — the official start to summer in Lake Highlands. The 5K race kicks off at 9 a.m. on Memorial Day Monday, followed by food and fun at Lake Highlands North Park.

Proceeds support Camp Sweeney for children with Type I Diabetes, sometimes called juvenile diabetes. Camp Sweeney helps children learn to test blood sugars, make healthy diet choices and administer insulin shots. For diabetic kids, experiencing the joys of “sleepaway camp” might be impossible without the medical supervision provided by highly trained counselors.

The fun begins with a 5K race on a certified course, followed by a Family Fun Run. The free outdoor festival features KidZone activities, live music and an art show.

Runners may register as a team or individual online here. Donors may contribute here. Lake Highlands North Park is at 9443 Church Road across from Lake Highlands High School.

Children have their faces painted at the festival.
