Che and Lindsey Hendrix

Che Hendrix and Brett Sawyer have spent so much time talking football together over the years, they can communicate on the sidelines with just a tip of a ballcap. Hendrix played for the Wildcats before graduating from Lake Highlands High School in 1995, and Sawyer was a year behind him. They’ve been coaching together at Boerne High, where Hendrix has served as head coach and Sawyer has been defensive coordinator.

Last month, Hendrix announced he’s leaving Texas to take a job as defensive analyst for the University of Arkansas. His son, Hutson, will play for the Razorbacks next year. Sawyer will become Boerne’s head coach.

“Boerne has been an incredible place to raise our family,” Hendrix said. “I’m extremely proud of our coaches, players, community and the athletic program we have built. The past seven years have been incredible.”

Boerne ISD Athletic Director Stan Leech introduced Sawyer as the new head coach, saying “this was an interview seven years in the making.”

“Coach Sawyer has been an integral part of Boerne’s success over the past seven years, helping shape a championship-caliber program. His leadership, experience as a head coach and deep connection to the Boerne community make him the ideal choice to continue the Greyhounds’ winning tradition.”
