Lake Highlands High School 1987 graduate Michael McBroom has been appointed director of athletics at Stephen F. Austin State University. He leaves his job as athletic director at West Texas A&M, where he has been an athletics administrator for 25 years.
“We are excited about the future of Lumberjack athletics under McBroom’s leadership,” said Gina Oglesbee, interim president at SFASU. “His proven ability to build championship-worthy programs — both on the playing surfaces and in the classroom — aptly matches the goals of SFA Athletics and the university.”
Under his leadership, athletics at WTAMU touts noteworthy achievements, including:
- Nine national championships,
- 100+ Lone Star Conference and NCAA regional championships,
- Nearly $100 million invested in constructing and renovating athletics facilities,
- More than $40 million generated in external support for scholarships, facilities and team operating budgets,
- Initiatives resulting in a 37% improvement in the academic success rate and GPA of student athletes,
- New attendance and ticket sales records across all sports, and
- Full scholarship funding for all women’s teams.
McBroom and wife, Angie, have four children: Johnny, Maggie, Ally, and Zoey. Ally is studying at the University of Texas at Austin and Zoey plays on the West Texas Women’s Basketball Team. Congratulations, Michael McBroom!
