At 3:04 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, the district announced via X that it would be canceling school for the remainder of the week due to an impending cold snap that the National Weather Service has forecasted to potentially bring two to five inches of snow to North Texas. The NWS issued a winter storm warning for Dallas County early Wednesday morning.

The statement issued by RISD states:

Richardson ISD schools and offices, including xPlore after-school programs, will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 9 and Friday, Jan. 10. This decision was made after careful consideration of the National Weather Service winter storm warning forecast, anticipated hazardous travel conditions, and expected extreme temperatures. Closure on Thursday, Jan. 9 includes all games, activities, and events.

According to the announcement, some high school athletic events may still be held Friday evening, weather permitting. Parents of players are advised to remain in contact with their child’s coaches for further information. Spectators are encouraged to monitor district social media accounts.
