If your book club is searching for a fun read in the new year, you needn’t look far. Sensible Shoes, written by Lake Highlands High School graduate Cindy Causey and set to be released January 6, is an amusing take on family, friendship, love and aging.
Causey is well-known to neighbors for her years spent operating the Dallas Media Center with her late husband Scott. Among other services, they transferred cherished old videotapes, slides, negatives and prints to modern usable formats, such as CD. Promising “never to send your media away,” they lovingly cared for decades-old home movies and photos.
After Scott’s death, Causey closed the media business, devoted time to their blended family of five children and did a little traveling. It wasn’t long, though, before she jumped back into writing — an activity she’s been turning to since her days at Lake Highlands Junior High. In fact, she recalls teaching herself to type in the eighth grade because she couldn’t scribble her thoughts fast enough into her paper diary.
Causey went on to earn a degree in advertising and work as copy chief for JCPenney Catalog, then as internet marketing manager JCPenney.com. She’s written three books for The Wild Rose Press.
“I’m beyond thrilled to have Sensible Shoes published,” she says. “It is the book of my heart, and I hope it will speak to women of a certain age with humor. Or as my character Tess would say that it will be ‘wise, funny, poignant and whatever that other thing is I can never remember.’.”
In the book, Tess Thomason is a plain-Jane, divorced mother and decidedly unprepared women’s newspaper columnist blindsided on her fiftieth birthday by her well-meaning family with a stack of gift cards she interprets as meaning she’s fat, frumpy and wrinkled. Facing a lonely future and failing career, Tess embarks on a journey of self-discovery, taking her readers along for the ride. But her resolve is nearly derailed by a hilarious season of family chaos that includes a surprise pregnancy, rushed wedding and unexpected houseguests.
In the midst of it all, Tess is drawn into a confusing new relationship with a man who is impossibly perfect for her. But if she can keep herself, her family and her willpower firmly seated on the crazy roller coaster of her life, maybe Tess will find her own self-worth and a new love in the bargain.
Causey’s next release, Saving Samantha, is a romantic suspense story due out in late 2025. Sensible Shoes is available Jan. 6 from The Wild Rose Press or Amazon.com. You may learn about Cindy’s journey on her website here or her blog here.
