The school held a canned food drive in benefit of Feed Lake Highlands this month, collecting over 1,000 pounds of food for the nonprofit, according to the organization’s Facebook. The donation comes at a time when Feed Lake Highlands Executive Director Cynthia Hernandez says shelves have not been as stocked as the organization would like them to be.

“We haven’t been able to gather certain foods that are staples, so these food drives have been able to supplement that,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez said the organization is serving 33% more families this year than it did in 2023, and as the holiday season approaches, donations like White Rock North’s are critical.

“They’re extremely important. We’ve seen an influx of people coming in, sp making sure they’re ready for the holidays,” Hernandez said. “We also believe that we always have to remember that people eat 365 days a year.”

Hernandez said that the organization is organizing a giving campaign for Giving Tuesday called Feed Beyond the Holidays. The initiative is geared towards monetary donations to help keep families supplied through the new year.

“We can actually stretch $1 in ways that sometimes when you go individually to try and buy stuff, you wouldn’t be able to feed the families, because we’ve seen an influx,” Hernandez said.

Giving Tuesday falls on Dec. 3 this year.
