Editor’s note: The showing is scheduled for Nov. 9.
Three years after the sudden death of Lake Highlands High School alumnus and Bastards of Soul frontman Chadwick Murray, a special documentary screening has been planned at the Angelika Film Center and Cafe.
The screening begins at 2 p.m. on Nov. 9, and will be followed by a Q&A with director-producer Paul Levatino, who graduated with Murray from LHHS in 1994. Levatino has extensive experience in both the film and music industries, and has worked with heavyweights like Erykah Badu in the past.
“Bastards of Soul transcends the specific story of a Texas band,” Levatino wrote in a statement. “It speaks to anyone who has ever dared to dream, to anyone who has faced the inevitable trials that life throws in our path, and to anyone who believes in the transformative power of music. It is a story that, while deeply rooted in my personal connection to these remarkable individuals, is universally relatable. It reminds us that time is fleeting, that our opportunities to realize our dreams are finite, and that sometimes, the most beautiful moments arise from the most heartbreaking circumstances.”
According to a release, the documentary follows the journey of its namesake band with behind-the-scenes clips and concert footage. It also explores the impact of Murray’s death from a sudden illness in 2021.
‘Bastards of Soul’ has been featured at the Dallas International Film Festival, Catalina Film Festival and San Antonio Film Festival. According to the filmmaker, it will be publicly released sometime in late 2024 or 2025 following the conclusion of its film tour.
All proceeds from the showing will benefit an education fund for Murray’s son. Recommended donations begin at $25, and tickets can be bought online here. The showing is part of the festivities for LHHS Class of 1994’s 30th reunion.
