Lake Highlands High School graduate and former NFL tight end Andre Tillman was inducted into the Texas Tech Football Ring of Honor this weekend.
At halftime of the Texas Tech-University of North Texas game on Saturday, Tillman was formally inducted as a member of Texas Tech’s most distinguished group of football alumni. He was inducted alongside wide receiver Wes Welker and linebacker Thomas Howard.
A multi-sport athlete before graduating in 1970, Tillman won district player of the year honors in basketball. On the football field, he wore #75 for the Wildcats and played as a lineman on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.Â
Post-LHHS, Tillman played for Coach Jim Carlen and Texas Tech after signing as a highly-rated recruit out of high school.
At Tech, Tillman switched to tight end. He earned First Team All-American honors in his senior year and was a key member of the 1973 squad which won 11 games, a record which remains tied for best in school history. The team finished the season with a win over Tennessee in the 1973 Gator Bowl, finishing the season ranked #11 in the AP Poll.
He would go on to play four seasons in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins after being drafted in the second round of the 1974 NFL Draft. Injuries eventually cut his career short in 1978 after logging 52 NFL starts.Â
