Summer is back in the neighborhood and so is the heat. Here’s five things you can do this weekend to cool off and unwind in and around Lake Highlands.

Grab a marg at one of the neighborhood favorites
An unmistakingly Tex-Mex way to beat summer heat, you’d be hard pressed to find a more refreshing hot-weather cocktail. Whether you’re looking for a traditional rocks with salt or an ice-cold frozen swirl, Lake Highlands has plenty to offer. The first name in local margaritas, Mariano’s Hacienda Ranch owner Mariano Martinez famously invented the frozen margarita machine in 1971. While not the most budget-friendly option, Mariano’s margarita menu offers depth and variety, with swirls, rocks and spiced margaritas offering something for everyone. If you’re looking for a less-expensive choice, Mariano’s still offers the original frozen for $12.

Past Mariano’s, there’s still plenty to choose from. Still slightly on the pricey side, Mi Cocina at Abrams and Walnut Hill serves great frozen, skinny and of course, rocks margaritas – if you can resist ordering a Mambo. Resident Taqueria offers casual margaritas in addition to craft tacos, and for those looking for something less than $10, Casita Tex Mex has got what you’re looking for.
Go for a swim at Lake Highlands North Aquatic Center

Don’t have a backyard or apartment complex pool? No local pool membership? No worries, Lake Highlands North Aquatic center is open to the public every day of the week except Thursday. Fri.-Tues., the pool is open from 12:30 to 7 p.m. Admission is $12 for those older than 12, $8 for children ages 11-2, and free for infants and toddlers under 2.
Take advantage of sales at Park Lane

Looking to do some shopping this weekend? The Shops at Park Lane has tons to offer, including sales this weekend. Try a yoga class
With a few local studios, you don’t have to look far to find a spot to realign your chakras. Yoga Art Music, also known as YAM, at Lakeridge Shopping Center offers two classes on both Saturday and Sunday. Offering drop-ins for $21, YAM’s yoga schedule can be found here.

A major player in the local craft beer scene, Lakewood Brewing Co. is hosting Texas-based acoustic duo The Kirbys Friday night at 5:30 p.m. Heavily inspired by classic rock with new wave features, The Kirby’s listed musical influences include America, The Black Keys, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, The Eagles, Van Halen and more. Guests can enjoy The Kirbys’ music alongside a cold craft brew from its extensive beer list. If you’re looking for a nice snack, LBC serves beer garden classics like signature flatbreads, nachos, pretzels and sandwiches.
