A Peep at the Coops is the largest fundraiser for Moss Haven Farm, a nonprofit outdoor learning garden and STEAM curriculum enrichment center for students at Moss Haven Elementary. Community support is pivotal to maintaining the farm’s educational initiatives.

The tour begins at Moss Haven Farm, where there’ll be a lineup of music, urban farming demonstrations and a farmer’s market complete with local producers and farm-fresh goods — plus a tasting of local honey. At the party you may purchase a map of area coops, including some here in Lake Highlands, and your map serves as your ticket for entry. Maps may also be purchased online.

Moss Haven Farm was founded in 2012 and has grown to 23 raised beds, a farm field and a brood of hens boasting ribbons from the State Fair of Texas. More than 10,000 pounds of farm-raised food have been donated to the North Texas Food Bank, providing produce to areas of Dallas where fresh food is scarce. Moss Haven students attend “farm class” each week in their outdoor classroom to develop a lifelong interest in responsible environmental practices and cultivate a lifelong passion for giving back to the community.

Funds raised by A Peep at the Coops will be used for educator expenses for weekly outdoor lessons, teacher training for STEM curriculum, growing capacity for the North Texas Food Bank, edible education for each grade level, materials for seasonal crops and ongoing care for chickens.

A Peep at the Coops runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 4. To purchase a map/ticket, see the website here. There’s also a pre-party, Pints with the Peeps, April 18 from 6-9 p.m. at Lakewood Brewery. In addition to games and raffles, $1 from each beer will go to Moss Haven Farm.
