Great American Hero

It’s official. Great American Hero, home of Jersey-style subs and Philly cheesesteaks, is now closed in Timber Creek shopping center.

New owners Danny Wilson and Jacob Cox purchased the sandwich shop last year and relocated it from its iconic spot on Lemmon Avenue. The restaurant had flourished for decades in its pink and yellow former home but lasted less than seven months in the black box between Whataburger and McAlister’s Deli. Loyal patrons and online reviewers say they had detected a decline in quality and freshness in recent weeks. Even when lines were long in the drive-thrus at nearby Chick-fil-A and Whataburger, Great American Hero’s parking lot stayed mostly empty.

The question now is whether the stand alone building at 6216 Retail Road can make a successful showing with any fast casual food tenant. Del Taco opened there in 2015, and Captain D’s Seafood gave it a try in 2019. Neither made much of an impression, despite all the visitors to Walmart and Sam’s and all the rooftops near Skillman and Northwest Highway — from Lake Highlands to Preston Hollow, from Lakewood to the Park Cities.

The Retail Connection represents Timber Creek, and no matter what they move into the Great American Hero spot next, chances are good neighbors are willing to give it a try. Personally, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a Chicken Salad Chick, but perhaps you’ve got preferences of your own. Hey, you do you. And best of luck.
