Following the attack at the Allen Premium Outlets that killed eight and wounded seven, the flags will honor the victims of the shooting and other lives lost to gun violence. There will be 120 flags put out for the average number of Americans killed by gun violence each day.

Whitney Hurwitz, one of the moms organizing the event, says anyone can come to the nonpartisan event. There will also be a representative from the organization Moms Demand Action giving out information for neighbors who want to get involved.

“We did think it was nice to have it on Mother’s Day as kind of a gathering of moms who are saying, “All we want for Mother’s Day is gun safety,'” Hurwitz says.

Neighbors can also take home flags with them to put in their yard to honor the eight victims of the Allen shooting.

“So, our hope is that we’ll then have people raising awareness and maybe asking what are these flags for,” she says. “And one of the big things that we’re hoping that we’re going to be talking to people about when they’re there is just how important it is to call your legislators and let them know a big action we’d love to see is reinstating the federal ban on assault rifles.”

The event will last an hour from 10 – 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 14 at Flag Pole Hill. There will also be a Moms Demand Action event, separate from this one, on Saturday in Allen. More info on that can be found here.
