Yasamean Zaidi Dozandeh’s photo, “The America We Live,” won first, and Adam Velte’s “Mad Mallard” won second.

The contest received about 117 entries, including some from students; a teacher from Highland Park ISD asked her students to submit photos to the contest for a class assignment.

Madeline Bracken, a newcomer to Dallas, started the contest. She often saw photos showcasing the beauty of the park and its animal inhabitants, but she wanted to raise awareness of the litter plaguing the area.

So she asked people to submit photos highlighting trash around the lake. See all of the photo submissions here.

Bracken said she hopes to hold the contest again next year.

Hate seeing trash at the lake? You’re not alone. Local nonprofit For the Love of the Lake hosts monthly shoreline clean-up events, and you can volunteer.
