If you’re a fan of Riley Keough or Reese Witherspoon or Taylor Jenkins Reid or rock music — or heck, if you watch television at all — check out the Prime Video limited series, Daisy Jones and the Six. The show, based on a novel by the best-selling author of Malibu Rising and backed by Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company, stars Elvis’ granddaughter as a rock-and-roll star.
I would say turn down the volume and just luxuriate in Keough’s resemblance to The King himself, but don’t do that. The 33-year-old actress reportedly spent more than a year strengthening her vocal cords to play the role of Daisy. Neither she, nor the other fine actors portraying her bandmates, dub a single glorious note.
While you watch, keep an eye out for episode 8 (they’re called tracks in the show), where the band visits radio stations while touring with their first album. At the 10:45 minute mark, Daisy greets listeners on KBOX Dallas, a real-life station formerly located where the Highland Hills neighborhood now stands at the southeast corner of Audelia and McCree.
The series’ ten episodes follow Daisy, an ambitious young songwriter and musician, as she joins The Six to form one of rock-and-roll’s most successful groups of the 1970s. Told mostly through interviews and oral histories by members of the band, the fictional story has the feel of an insider’s rock doc. Don’t miss it.
