Old football coaches have a saying: There are no turkeys after Thanksgiving. If you’re still in the playoffs after Turkey Day, they’ll tell ya, you must have a heckuva team.

The Wildcat soccer team defeated Flower Mound Marcus 1-0 Friday night to advance to the regional semifinals. Put another way, Lake Highlands is playing past Thanksgiving now.

LHHS will face El Paso Eastlake April 7 at 4 p.m. for a chance to play in the regional finals April 8 at noon. Eastlake High is located 8 miles from the US-Mexico border and 633 miles from Wildcat Stadium.

Lake Highlands was runner-up to Irving in District 7-6A, and Allen beat Irving in a crazy game Friday. Irving scored early and led throughout, but in the final two seconds, Allen popped in a goal to tie the game. The match went to penalty kicks to break the tie, where Allen bested Irving 3-2 to advance.

We will update this post when details about the LH vs. Eastlake game, including how to purchase tickets, become available. Go Cats.

Below, team captain Cung Lian dedicates the win to senior principal Tessa Pettigrew, who died Friday afternoon after a medical episode. The school’s annual Barn Dance, scheduled for Friday Night, was cancelled, and counselors will be on hand Monday for students and teachers who wish to talk about the loss of their beloved friend.
