Literacy Achieves, the Vickery Meadow-based English language learning nonprofit for refugees and immigrants, is celebrating literacy during the Wings of Spring event March 30.

Wings of Spring has raised $3 million for education and life skills programs for families across Dallas that the nonprofit has helped. More than 200 volunteer teachers have helped Literacy Achieves provide free programs for approximately 700 adults and 200 children annually in Vickery Meadow, East Dallas and West Dallas.

Veteran journalist, investigative reporter, and Literacy Achieves board member and podcast host Byron Harris will be the recipient of this year’s Marnie Wildenthal Literacy Legacy Award.

The award recognizes outstanding contributions to advance literacy and learning in underserved communities and named in honor of philanthropist Marnie Wildenthal.

Crime and justice reporter Rebecca Lopez and her husband, Steve Oliphant, will serve as honorary chairs for the event. There will also be musical performances for the night from singer-songwriter and harpist Jess Garland and classical and contemporary music group Dallas String Quartet.
