Every student athlete dreams of hoisting the state championship trophy with his teammates, but few personal honors can beat receiving your own lookalike bobblehead from NBC 5’s Pat Doney. Lake Highlands High basketball phenom Tre Johnson was featured on Inside High School Sports Saturday night to receive his own keepsake likeness from Doney himself.

Doney gushed about Johnson’s journey to become a top national recruit and “arguably the #1 player in America for 2024.” When asked to explain the key to his success, Johnson said he focuses on working hard and contributing to the squad wherever and whenever he can.

Johnson leads the district champion Wildcats with 622 points — an average of 22.2 points per game. He averages 6.5 rebounds per game and wows frequent sell-out crowds with spectacular dunks and 3-point shots.

Johnson described his teammates as family and said he was on his way, after shooting the spot at NBC 5 studios, to hang out with his fellow players. He’s had offers from just about every college in the U S of A, so Doney asked about his long-term goals.

“I want to be the number one pick” in the NBA draft, Johnson replied, as coolly as if he was predicting he’d make his next free throw.

The Wildcats play their final game of the regular season Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Irving High. Playoff details will be available soon. Go Cats.
