“We never really thought this would come to fruition,” Kellagher said as she cut the ribbon. “Northlake is getting a facelift, little by little. Every year it just keeps getting better and better.”

PTA President Brennan Edgerton and Laura Arizmendi, last year’s president, assisted with the dedication, along with Carlin Volkmer and Brad McCutcheon from the Exchange Club of Lake Highlands, a major donor for the project.

Messages on the old-style marquee were tough to change, and volunteers were often sent out into the rain or heat to heave open the door and tackle the task.

“We also wanted to remove the 6-foot bushes, add a seating area and make the front of the school more visually appealing and welcoming to students and the entire neighborhood,” said McCutcheon, also a Northlake parent.

Volkmer said Exchange Club members enjoy deploying grants to enhance neighborhood elementary schools.

“We try to support projects that are sustainable and will help the school, not just for a day or a week, but for several years,” he explained. “This was an opportunity to not just beautify but step up and give them something they needed and deserved.”
