The Family Place hosted another successful Trailblazer Awards last Friday.
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson was the guest of honor and received this year’s Trailblazer Award. Actress Christina Ricci was keynote speaker, sharing her life experiences in a discussion with CBS 11 reporter Andrea Lucia.
For over 25 years, Texas Trailblazer Awards have honored those who create positive change in the community and is the largest educational event for The Family Place.
“Congresswoman Johnson leads by example, working tirelessly to help others and create change at the local, state and national level,” Family Place CEO Mimi Crume Sterling said in the press release. “This year’s Texas Trailblazer goes above and beyond the call of duty to make Texas and our United States a better place.”
Prior to the luncheon’s main events at the Omni Hotel, the more than 550 guests mingled at a VIP reception and took pictures with Ricci. Afterward, guests listened to recreated calls from the domestic violence agency’s crisis hotline.
Johnson was met with a standing ovation as she received her award and Family Place case manager Patty Bryant-Jones shared a video detailing her experience and life after abuse. Bryant-Jones attributed her recovery to the organization.
Co-charis for the event— Jeannie Barsam, Stacee Johnson-Williams, Lisa Sherrod— also shared their personal experiences with domestic violence.
All funds raised during the luncheon will support prevention, intervention, restoration, and educational programs for survivors of family violence.
