Johnson has represented Texas Congressional District 30, which includes most of Dallas County, for 15 terms. She’s also the first African American woman to chair the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

Some of her many achievements include introducing the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act in 2020, which paved the way for the suicide hotline number to be changed to 9-8-8. That act just passed in July.

Her initiative, A World of Women for World Peace, has also raised awareness internationally for victims of war and women promoting non-violent conflict resolution within their communities.

“The remarkable career of Congresswoman Johnson attests to her tenacity to get things done and her intense compassion for people,” CEO of The Family Place Mimi Sterling said in a press release. “We are honored to have her as our award recipient this year.”

Johnson will receive the award at The Family Place’s annual Texas Trailblazer Awards Luncheon on Friday, Sept. 23, at the Omni Dallas Hotel.

Since 1996, the Texas Trailblazer Awards have honored those who create positive change in the community. The luncheon raises critical funds for The Family Place.
