Friends and family of the woman killed Thursday by her ex-boyfriend are seeking donations to help pay for her funeral. They’ve set up a Go Fund Me page to pay for the return of her body to her hometown in Honduras. Her 14-year-old daughter remains in the hospital as she recovers from gunshot wounds, and her son is staying with relatives.

The incident began before 1:00 a.m. Thursday at the Bernard Apartments, 12100 Audelia, when 44-year-old Jorge Saldenos Escobar Flores shot 33-year-old Karla Castillo and her 14-year-old daughter. First responders transported both to nearby hospitals, but Castillo was pronounced dead.

After a lengthy standoff, police broke into the apartment and found Flores dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Domestic violence experts in Dallas say such stories, sadly, are not uncommon.

“The numbers are still staggering,” Jan Langbein, CEO of Genesis Women’s Shelter, shared with CBS 11’s Robbie Owens. “We know that one out of every three women in the state of Texas will know domestic violence.”
