Feed Lake Highlands is nourishing bodies with more than food. Volunteers are feeding children’s minds with reading assistance.
Students at Skyview Elementary are improving their reading skills thanks to the nonprofit’s tutoring program.
Brenda Marsh started the reading tutoring program at Skyview with volunteers to help children with their reading tasks and catch up after COVID delays in learning.
There are seven students at Skyview who have improved in reading after receiving help from tutoring volunteers and a lead teacher. Volunteers help students one-on-one by listening to them and keeping them on task.
“The students are developing confidence in their ability to read and are enjoying relationships with the volunteers,” the organization posted on Facebook.
Feed Lake Highlands also tutors at-risk students at Thurgood Marshall and Wallace Elementary with most students coming from Spanish-speaking homes. Tutoring is twice a week.
