The Lake Highlands High School Bass Team earned top honors in the Texas High School Bass Association (THSBA) tournament at Lake Lewisville Saturday. The Wildcats bested 24 high school squads and walked away with the “School Champions” trophy.

Wildcats Jackson Marburger, Will Hutton, Drew Dubuclet, Joe Krejci, Hudson Durham, Gage Duhn, Luke Smith and Braden Davenport were among 112 fishermen in the water. Marburger and Hutton finished third with five fish at 13.4 pounds, Durham and Duhn took fourth with 4 fish at 12.44 pounds, and Dubuclet and Krejci caught 2 for 4.86 pounds. The top 3 weights are combined for the judging.

“The best part about this tournament was bringing home multiple pieces of hardware from our teams,” said Marburger, also known as LHHS’ energetic basketball manager and student council president. “It’s not every day you see a high school with a ‘School Champions’ trophy in the trophy case representing a fishing team.”

“It’s so rewarding to see all the hard work behind the scenes finally pay off,” agreed Dubuclet. Dubuclet recently signed to play football for the Air Force Academy.

The team will compete again March 12 at Lake Ray Roberts. They have plenty of interest from young anglers, but not nearly enough boats and boat captains. If you’re willing to help, Marburger invites you to text or call him at 713-852-7599 or email him at JacksonMarburger@gmail.com.

“We want as many kids as possible to join this club in the future,” says Hutton, recently named by the Texas High School Coaches Association to their Academic All State Elite Team. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions or come to a meeting. It’s a super fun way for kids to get involved in the school and enjoy the outdoors at the same time.”

Keep an eye out for news of the team’s spring crawfish boil. The neighborhood event began as a fundraiser last year, and it was too much fun not to continue. Go Cats.
