Update: A candlelight vigil for Officer Gibson will be held Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. in the sally port of the Dallas Police Department’s north central substation, 6969 McCallum Boulevard.
Chris Gibson, longtime school resource officer (SRO) at Lake Highlands High School, has died. Gibson went to the hospital Sunday morning with breathing difficulties due to COVID-19 and passed away shortly thereafter.
Gibson, known as “Gibby” to friends in Richardson ISD schools and in the Dallas Police Department, was a favorite of students, teachers and staff members at LHHS, Forest Meadow Junior High and other RISD schools. He often worked shifts at sporting events and showed a genuine interest in the lives of the people he was sworn to protect.
“Chris Gibson was such a wonderful friend, always smiling and telling jokes,” fellow SRO Anna Kubeer shared on Facebook. “He was all about his family and treated me like family. I will miss him until we meet again.”
“Very thankful this world is not our home and that your loved ones will see you again some day,” agreed LHHS grad Molly Maturi. “Officer Chris Gibson you were the best and very special to the Maturi family. The Maturi girls always felt safe when you were around. Prayers for your wife and daughters. Dallas Police has lost one of the best in the game.”
“In shock & heartbroken,” tweeted RISD’s Lisa Andrews, former assistant to the LHHS principal. “Over many many years, I have been honored to call you a co-worker & blessed to call you my friend. I will miss your big bear hugs every time I would see you. You will be missed deeply by me and everyone that had the privilege to know you.”
