Lake Highlands High School valedictorian Paxton Smith was awarded WrapWomen’s Voice of the Future Award. Actress Emily Hampshire from “Schitt’s Creek” presented the award to Smith at TheWrap’s Power Women Summit on Monday.
“WrapWomen’s Voice of the Future Award honors a young woman leading social change through art, spoken word or change-based initiatives that inspire meaningful change in society,” Hampshire said in her introduction.
After making headlines earlier this year for speaking out on Texas’ latest abortion legislation during her graduation speech, Smith gained national attention. Since then, she’s written a book, been the subject of pop art and embroidery and recognized by leading women.
“…Texas passed SB 8, and now even my choice to have children is not my own,” Smith said in her speech.
