Putting in the work

Laurie and Sam Gist met the summer before their junior year of high school when Laurie was applying to be a server at Souper Salad, where Sam worked. Laurie ate lunch at the Souper Salad shortly after applying and left Sam a note on a napkin that he still has to this day. They both graduated in 2001, but Laurie from LHHS and Sam from a nearby private school. Laurie brought Sam to all the LHHS dances and football games. While they went on to date other people in college, Laurie and Sam always felt like the other was “the one.” Sam proposed on New Year’s Eve 2005, and they were married in 2006. Laurie and Sam now have two children together, Aiden and Lily. “Our secret to a successful marriage is putting in the work and not giving up on each other,” Laurie says. “More than anything, we just have fun together whether it’s on vacation or snuggled up on the couch in our PJ’s. He makes me laugh more than anyone else.”
