Nick Thurman, a 2013 Lake Highlands High grad, has been elevated by the New England Patriots from practice squad to 53-man roster for Sunday night’s game in Seattle. The 6-foot-4, 305-pound defensive tackle will play backup to Lawrence Guy and Byron Cowart, reports ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss.

Thurman, 25, graduated from the University of Houston and entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Houston Texans in 2018. Thurman spent the 2019 season on New England’s practice squad.

“This will be his first career regular-season game, a credit to his persistence,” says Reiss.

COVID-19 will keep spectators out of CenturyLink Stadium at tonight’s game, but at least one of his former teachers will be watching to see if Thurman makes it onto the turf.

“Nick!! One of @LakeHighlandsHS absolute best,” tweeted LHHS STAR teacher Casey Boland Saturday. “Smart, good man.”
