Lake Highlands High grad Ryan Berg will be a contestant on NBC’s The Voice when it returns Oct. 19

Did you catch the Chiefs game last night? How about the commercial for the new season of The Voice on NBC? There were clips of Carson Daly, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton and…holy cow, was that Lake Highlands native Ryan Berg?!?

It’s true. Berg will be a contestant when The Voice returns October 19. If you watched the preview, available below, you’ll see that Stefani appears to offer Berg a spot on “Team Gwen.” (Note that her boyfriend, hunky country star and leader of “Team Blake,” should probably give her some shootin’ lessons, right quick.)

Berg, who traveled to California two months ago to audition and begin filming, can’t reveal details but is surely having the time of his life.

When I spoke to Berg in April, the singer and guitar player told me coronavirus restrictions had been tough on him and his fellow musicians. His local fanbase couldn’t get out to his traditional haunts, places The Rustic, Double Wide, Barley House and The Goat where lines formed regularly to see him play.

“I truly miss the relationship between the musicians I’m normally working and growing with,” the LHHS 2011 grad told me. “We are lucky that we can continue to work together through technology, but the energy that we bring and take off the stage is sorely missed. I also miss the interaction between the audience and I.”
