Back Country was founded in 1975 by Frank Hart and moved from its original location on East Northwest Highway to Greenville Avenue in 1988. Scott Collard, longtime general manager at Big Al’s Smokehouse, purchased Back Country in 2016 and brought with him his pitmaster, Earnest Griffith, Sr. Griffith keeps their three hickory-burning smokers churning and charms visitors as they pass through the line cafeteria-style.

Back Country serves Texas-style barbecue, including beef, ribs, ham, turkey, chicken and sausage. Sides include jumbo baked potatoes, pinto beans, corn on the cob, cream corn, green beans, twice-baked potato casserole, potato salad and okra. For dessert they offer banana pudding, pecan pie, cobblers and chocolate brownie cake.

“Teresa and I would like to thank everyone for your continued support as we navigate the trying times,” wrote owner Collard on the Back Country Facebook page this week.

Pick up and drive thru will be available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and delivery services like GrubHub, Postmates, Doordash and Uber Eats will be delivering as usual. Back Country is at 6940 Greenville Avenue near Park Lane. Their phone is 214-696-6940.
