It’s basketball season and we know what that means in Lake Highlands: It’s Hoops in the Highlands time!

This is the 17th anniversary for the 3-on-3 basketball tournament that benefits Lake Highlands Junior High and its feeder schools. It takes an entire community of support and participation to pull off this exciting day. Just ask Robert Walne, long time Lake Highlands resident and a 2020 Hoops in the Highlands sponsor.

“Hoops is an exciting, fun weekend for Lake Highlands families to come together to enjoy competition and camaraderie. It brings kids from many different schools around the community together while also raising money for Lake Highlands Junior High and its feeder schools. Community support from local businesses and individuals is paramount to Hoops’ success. We live in a very special place and events like Hoops have become rooted in tradition here. It has always been important to our family to give back and support the community as a whole,” he said.

While Robert remembers playing basketball through Spring Valley Athletic Association (SVAA) as a child, a pickup game on the street or in a friend’s driveway, his favorite Hoops memories come as a parent cheering on his children from the sidelines.

“We love coming to Hoops and it’s especially fun now that our kids participate,” he added. It’s always exciting to see the whole community out competing and supporting each other, from the youngest to the oldest on the courts. It’s something people look forward to each year; it’s exciting to see teams come with their fun, unique team names and uniforms. And in the end, all the efforts from the Hoops committee and countless volunteers raise money for several local schools. This money makes a huge difference filling gaps that might go left underfunded.”

Hoops in the Highlands, to be held Saturday, March 28 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., is the annual fundraiser benefiting Lake Highlands Junior High, Thurgood Marshall, Wallace, White Rock, Northlake and Lake Highlands Elementary schools. Registration ends March 13 and the Hoops committee hopes to set another record number of teams this year. Last year, more than 800 students played from more than 50 schools. We anticipate between 800-1000 players, and thousands of spectators, volunteers, and families will gather at Highland Oaks Church of Christ, 10805 Walnut Hill between Plano Road and LBJ, to cheer them on.
