What happens when a movie star, a rock star, a radio personality, a politician, two Terlingua veterans and a couple of educators judge a chili cook off? Thousands of dollars are earned for students and teachers at Lake Highlands Junior High.
The cook off, hosted again by Oak Highlands Brewery, was an adults-only affair for LHJH parents and their friends who believe kids aren’t the only ones who should get to have fun. Besides sharing delicious chili, parents went all-out with games, costumes and decorated booths.
The Saturday Night Live-themed crew took the prize for Best Costumes and the Forrest Gump-themed “Life is Like a Bowl of Chili” won Best Overall Booth. First Place Chili honors went to Tri Lambda for their Revenge of the Nerds creation, and the team celebrated their third win with a cold OHB brew. Second place – by one point – went to the Dead Chili team, which had pulled double duty by entering another contest earlier in the day. Saturday Night Live’s chili came in third.
Congratulations to all, and thank you to celebrity judges Burton Gilliam from Blazing Saddles, Ken Bethea of the Old 97s, State Rep. John Turner, Julie Dobbs of Ticket radio, Terlingua veterans Ted Hume and Andrew Hamilton, LHJH’s Vince Venditto and Wallace’s Frank Gomez. Thanks also to parent volunteers and generous sponsors.
