The City of Plano said Wednesday the overflow occurred from a manhole near the Glen Eagles Golf Course began Wednesday morning when the wastewater spilled out of a manhole and into White Rock Creek.

The spill comes about six months after another 100,000 gallons of wastewater surged into the creek in October. That incident was preceded by a leak in which 1 million gallons overflowed.

The City of Plano explained the overflow was due to the recent heavy rains in the area.

“While the sanitary sewer system is designed to handle some inflow and infiltration, when it is excessive, as during our recent rains, the system’s capacity is exceeded, resulting in overflows,” the release states.

Once the flow is contained, crews will clean the creek and check the health of the fish, according to the City of Plano.

The North Texas Municipal Water District is working on a $6.5 million project to expand the area’s pump station, which transfers excess flows to the wastewater treatment facility. That improvement, expected to be complete by the end of this year, should help prevent future leaks, officials said.
