If you’re planning to come out to this year’s Hoops in the Highlands and choose a team to root for, you’ll have to be specific. For the first time in the 15-year history of the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, there are a record-breaking 201 teams registered to participate – 9 named for Mavericks wunderkind Luka Doncic.
You can cheer for the Luka Sky Ballers, the Luka’s Bazookas or the HalleLukas. You can yell for the Luka Magic, the Luka Jukas or the Luka-likes. You can even holler for the Luka Ladies, the Luka Deez 3s or the Lethal Lukas.
(Note to The Richards Group: You’ve got some creative future marketers in this class of ballers.)
Hoops in the Highlands, to be held Saturday, April 6th from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., is the annual fundraiser benefiting Lake Highlands Junior High, Thurgood Marshall Elementary, Wallace, White Rock and Northlake. Registration is now closed for all ten divisions, but boys and girls in grades K-8 have formed teams of 4 to compete for a year of bragging rights, and part of the fun includes naming their squad. Hundreds of students will participate, and hundreds more observers will gather at Highland Oaks Church of Christ, 10805 Walnut Hill between Plano Road and LBJ, to cheer them on.
If you go, watch for the new Hoops Hot Shot contest. You may sign up here to volunteer or provide much-needed supplies to the event.
Go Luka!
