If the traffic-control beacons with three lensesĀ along Audelia Road confuse you, don’t be alarmed.

One avid Advocate reader pointed out many passersby (including myself, to be honest) are using the traffic control devices incorrectly.

The High Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) beacons are positioned along Audelia Road at Lake Highlands Trail and, most recently, Flag Pole Hill Trail.

When a pedestrian or cyclist crossing the street activates the beacon, the lenses first flash yellow lights that indicate drivers should slow down. The lenses then slowly transition from solid yellow to red so that pedestrians can cross the road safely.

Several states, including Oklahoma and Delaware, have created videos explaining how the HAWK signal works. At least we’re not the only ones who didn’t catch on immediately.
