Mesquite football players will wear “JE” on their helmets Friday night at the Boneyard.

When Mesquite takes on Lake Highlands Friday night at the Boneyard, their football team and coaches say they have extra motivation to do their best. The Skeeters will be playing for a former teammate seen in the news over the past few weeks — Jordan Edwards.

Edwards, a freshman, was killed while riding in a car with his brother and two friends after a party in April of 2017. Former Balch Springs officer Roy Oliver was convicted of murder in Dallas Tuesday for shooting the unarmed 15-year-old.

The sentencing phase, which continues today, includes testimony from teachers, coaches and others who describe the boy to have been of fine character. They say the kid known as “Peanut” worked out every day, made good grades and intended to go to college.

Today, Edwards’ old jersey is still hanging in his locker, and hard-working Skeeters now earn the right to wear his No. 11 on the field. His best friend, Dewayne Adams, will wear it at Wildcat Stadium Friday night. On every helmet is a “JE” sticker for the teammate they won’t forget.

Mesquite vs. Lake Highlands kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
